OUR SERVICES: CLIMATE ACTION

Adapt and thrive in the face of a change climate

Reduce impact and prepare for the future.

The increasingly serious climate crisis is being felt by communities everywhere, posing significant threats to people and the planet.

Climate change is an environmental challenge that has interconnected implications for society.

Extreme and erratic weather, a loss of biodiversity and diminishing soil quality present severe challenges not only to rural farming communities but to companies that rely on having a resilient supply of raw materials.

As a result, climate action remains the No. 1 sustainability and ESG priority for most companies. Reducing our impact on the planet, and generating a net positive climate, requires new solutions and further innovation.

By working with CottonConnect, brands and retailers are able to tackle climate change while simultaneously addressing many of the interrelated social challenges that are both a result of ecosystem changes and also exacerbating the issue.

We’re focused on delivering sustainable cotton programmes, solutions and interventions that cut GHGs in line with the Paris Agreement to limit global warming to 1.5°C by 2050, while helping farmers adapt to global warming.

CottonConnect can help you to take climate action in the following ways:

Manage what you measure

We know how important it is to understand your climate impacts in taking action to reduce your greenhouse gas emissions.

That’s why we support our farmers by providing carbon mapping and data management tools that can help them make more informed on-farm decisions that will cut their carbon footprint. We use the Cool Farm Tool which quantifies on-farm GHGs and soil carbon sequestration.

Respond to the biodiversity challenge

Our biodiversity is being eliminated, with butterflies, birds and reptiles slowly disappearing.

Many of our programmes encourage farmers to use regenerative farming techniques and practices to reverse this decline and help them adapt to climate change. Interventions include: intercropping, and improving soil health through carbon sequestration.

Our Organic Cotton Farmer Training Programme encourages the use of bio-pesticides and bio-fertilisers which has helped to reduce input costs by more than 35%. See Our Impact for more information.

Adapt to changes already happening

While climate change mitigation is crucial, we must also help farmers adapt to changes already happening as a result of climate change, and future-proof their livelihoods, productivity and businesses for the longer term.

By giving them the tools, insight and knowledge to boost productivity while using less water, or improve soil health by using bio-pesticides, for example, we can help them to succeed and build resilience despite climate change.

In 2022, Pakistan endured a record-breaking heatwave followed by catastrophic floods. Estimates suggest 40% of the country’s cotton crop was wiped out due to the floods. Working with our local partners, CottonConnect provided relief aid in the form of food packages, medical kits and temporary shelter to those affected. We’re now focused on working with local partners to support communities to re-establish their farms and livelihoods.
